Relentless Heatwave Scorches Jammu Region; Samba Sizzles at 46.6°C

Jammu, June 9: A crippling heatwave continues to tighten its grip over the Jammu region, pushing temperatures to alarming levels and disrupting daily life. On Monday, the district of Samba emerged as the hottest spot in the region, registering a searing 46.6 degrees Celsius, according to the Meteorological Department. The intense heatwave, which has persisted for the past four consecutive days, has now left several districts struggling under extreme conditions.

Jammu city also bore the brunt of the heat, with the maximum temperature climbing to 44.3 degrees Celsius—markedly higher than Sunday’s already sweltering 42.7 degrees. Five districts in the region reported maximum temperatures exceeding the 40-degree Celsius threshold, signaling a region-wide weather emergency.

Katra, which serves as the base camp for pilgrims en route to the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, recorded 40.2 degrees Celsius, adding discomfort for the steady stream of devotees and tourists. Both Ramban and Kathua districts reported equally scorching highs at 43.2 degrees Celsius, further underscoring the widespread nature of the heatwave.

While the Jammu region baked under blistering sun, the Kashmir valley also experienced warmer-than-usual conditions. Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a maximum temperature of 33.3 degrees Celsius—well above the seasonal average. Even the typically cool desert regions of Leh and Kargil weren’t spared, with Leh recording 26.9 degrees Celsius and Kargil at 27.9 degrees.

The persistent heatwave has raised concerns about public health, water scarcity, and strain on the power grid due to increased use of cooling appliances. Authorities have urged residents to avoid exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours, remain hydrated, and take necessary precautions to mitigate heat-related illnesses. The Meteorological Department has warned that the prevailing conditions are likely to continue, and citizens should brace for more intense heat in the coming days.
