Reliance Rejects Bottleneck Claims, Says Battery Manufacturing Project on Track

Company dismisses reports of setbacks after China tech talks, says Jamnagar giga factory execution progressing as planned

Mumbai, Jan 14 : Reliance Industries on Tuesday firmly denied reports suggesting delays or setbacks in its lithiumion battery cell manufacturing plans, asserting that the project remains on track and aligned with its original timelines.

The clarification comes after media reports claimed that Reliance had slowed or reconsidered its battery manufacturing strategy following unsuccessful talks with Chinese firm Xiamen Hithium Energy Storage Technology for licensing battery cell technology. The reports suggested that negotiations stalled due to China’s tighter restrictions on overseas technology transfers.

Rejecting these claims, the Mukesh Ambani led conglomerate said there has been no change in its roadmap to build a world-class battery manufacturing ecosystem in India.

“We would like to categorically affirm that there has been no change in our plans for creating a world-leading battery storage manufacturing ecosystem, from cell manufacturing to containerised energy storage systems. These plans are progressing well in line with our target timelines,” a Reliance spokesperson said in a statement.

Reliance had earlier announced that battery cell manufacturing would begin in 2026. Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani had told shareholders in August 2025 that the company’s battery giga factory would start with a capacity of 40 GWh per year, with plans to scale it up to 100 GWh annually.

The company also clarified that it is not solely dependent on Chinese technology. Reliance can leverage the expertise of its US-based subsidiary Lithium Werks, which specialises in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, as well as its UK based subsidiary Faradion, known for advanced lithium ion battery technologies for automotive applications.

“Battery energy storage systems, battery pack manufacturing and cell manufacturing have always been integral to our energy storage strategy, and execution is progressing as planned,” the spokesperson added.

Reliance has committed an investment of Rs 75,000 crore to build an integrated manufacturing ecosystem covering the solar value chain, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and electrolysers at Jamnagar, Gujarat. The Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Manufacturing Complex is being developed as a single site, modular, and fully integrated facility, which the company describes as among the largest and most advanced in the world.
