Retired Police Officer Shot Dead by Terrorists During Morning Prayers, Cowardly Act of Violence

Srinagar, 24-12-2023 :  In a tragic incident, terrorists targeted and fatally shot a retired Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Shafi Mir, in a mosque located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district during the early hours of Sunday. The retired officer was attacked while offering the call to prayers in the local mosque situated at Peth Gantmulla village along the Baramulla-Uri highway. Despite being swiftly transported to a medical facility in Baramulla, Mir was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending doctors.

Authorities reported that the assailants fired upon Mohd Shafi, a retired police officer, while he was praying Azan (call for prayers) in the mosque at Gantmulla, Sheeri #Baramulla. In response to the attack, a joint team of security forces promptly cordoned off the area to trace and apprehend the attackers. The police, in a social media post, stated that the area had been cordoned off, with further details awaited.

Sources revealed that Mir had retired in 2012 and was residing in the village where the incident occurred. The shocking killing transpired in an area that has historically been peaceful, even during the peak of militancy.

The assassination of the retired police officer has triggered widespread condemnation from various quarters. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, expressed his alarm at the escalating terrorist attacks in the region. Azad urged the government to take decisive measures to crackdown on terrorism and ensure the safety of all citizens.

Altaf Bukhari, President of the Apni Party, characterized the act as cowardly and indicative of the true nature of the perpetrators. He emphasized the need for society to unite against such killings, dismissing any notion that the attackers were conducting Jihad.

Altaf Thakur, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), condemned the dastardly act of killing a 72-year-old retired police officer, highlighting that terror and terrorists have no religion. Thakur urged the police to sternly punish the culprits involved in the heinous act.
