RJD’s Poll Debacle Lifts Lid on Growing Rift in Lalu Yadav’s Family

Social media outbursts, allegations and silence from Tejashwi deepen internal turmoil

Patna, Nov 17: What began as a warm birthday wish soon spiralled into a full-blown political and personal crisis for the Lalu Prasad Yadav family. Days after Rohini Acharya affectionately wished her brother Tejashwi Yadav a happy birthday on November 9, the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s humiliating electoral loss cracked open long-simmering tensions within Bihar’s most prominent political dynasty.

Rohini, who posted cheerful family photographs with Tejashwi and their mother Rabri Devi earlier in the month, shifted tone dramatically as the RJD led Mahagathbandhan fell sharply behind the BJP-led NDA on counting day, November 14. With trends stabilising and the NDA crossing 200 seats, the alliance ended the race with just 35 seats, compared to the NDA’s 202.

As Congress and other alliance partners conceded defeat, Tejashwi Yadav the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial face remained conspicuously silent, fuelling speculation.

Rohini’s explosive posts spark crisis

By the afternoon of November 15, Rohini posted an alarming message on X claiming she was “quitting politics” and “disowning” her family. Minutes later, she edited the post, alleging pressure from Tejashwi’s close aides, Sanjay Yadav and Rameez, to make the statement.

She later told reporters she had been “thrown out of the house” for questioning the reasons behind the RJD’s defeat. “The entire party is asking why we lost… If Sanjay Yadav wants to be Chanakya, then it is Chanakya who will have to face the questions,” she said.

Rohini also alleged she had been insulted, beaten with slippers, and told she had donated a “dirty kidney” to Lalu Prasad Yadav in exchange for an election ticket. “I did not compromise on my self-respect,” she wrote in another emotional social media post.

Tej Pratap steps in, calls sister’s humiliation ‘unbearable’

In a strongly worded response, Rohini’s brother Tej Pratap Yadav condemned the alleged humiliation and warned of consequences for “traitors” targeting his sister. “The insult done to my sister is absolutely unbearable under any circumstances,” he said, urging Lalu Prasad Yadav to intervene.

Rohini names sister-in-law, clarifies she’s cut ties only with Tejashwi

Rohini also named Tejashwi’s wife Rachel Yadav among those she holds responsible. She asserted she had severed ties only with Tejashwi, not with her parents or other siblings. “Rohini jo bolti hai sach bolti hai,” she told reporters, maintaining that everything she revealed was true.

More family members leave Patna

As tensions escalated, three of Lalu’s other daughters Rajlakshmi, Ragini, and Chanda were seen leaving Patna for Delhi, while Rohini herself returned to Mumbai to be with her in-laws.
