NEW YORK, Aug 25: Tennis legend Roger Federer is set to return to the US Open this week, four years after his retirement from professional tennis, for a pair of exhibition matches during Fan Week.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion’s appearance was confirmed by the US Open on Sunday, generating considerable excitement among tennis fans ahead of the year’s final major tournament.
Federer will take part in exhibition action at Flushing Meadows on August 25. His return comes shortly after Serena Williams also made headlines with her planned appearance in the revamped US Open mixed doubles competition.
Despite returning to the tournament grounds, Federer has made clear that his appearance should not be viewed as the beginning of another professional career.
