Satya Nadella Lauds India’s Growing Data Centre Capacity, Says Held Investment Talks With PM Modi

Microsoft commits USD 17.5 billion by 2030, expands cloud and sovereign AI infrastructure in India

New Delhi, Dec 10: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Wednesday said the company is enthusiastic about the rapid expansion of its data centre infrastructure in India and confirmed that he has discussed Microsoft’s investment plans with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Nadella recently announced a USD 17.5 billion investment by 2030 to build infrastructure and strengthen sovereign capabilities to support India’s AI-first future. This marks Microsoft’s third major AI-led investment commitment in India in the past two months.

Speaking at a Microsoft event in the national capital, Nadella said the company already has data centre operations in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai, and is looking forward to bringing its India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad online next year.

“We’re thrilled about all the data centre capacity that is coming live. We already have presence in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai, and we are very excited about our India South Central cloud region, based in Hyderabad, which will come up next year,” he said.

The Hyderabad-based India South Central cloud region is expected to go live by mid-2026.

Nadella also said he met Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday and discussed Microsoft’s investments in the country. “We are really excited about the investment we’ve made and I had the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister to share that excitement,” he added.

As India prepares to roll out the Digital Personal Data Protection regime, Nadella said Microsoft is introducing sovereign public cloud and sovereign private cloud solutions for Indian customers.

“With sovereignty, it is equally important to ensure world-class cybersecurity and cyber resilience,” he said.
