New Delhi, Sep 24: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to provide detailed information regarding the custody of separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah in connection with other criminal cases.
The bench sought a comprehensive update on all cases in which Shah is involved, including the nature of the charges, the duration of his detention, and the legal proceedings underway. This direction comes amid concerns over ensuring transparency and adherence to due process in high-profile cases involving separatist activities.
Shah, a prominent pro-freedom leader from Jammu and Kashmir, has been arrested multiple times under various laws, including anti-terror and public order statutes. The apex court’s order requires the NIA to submit a detailed report to facilitate judicial oversight and review of his detention in relation to ongoing investigations.
The court emphasized the need for the agency to clarify whether Shah’s custody in one case is being appropriately accounted for while addressing other pending criminal proceedings, ensuring compliance with legal safeguards.
