Scientist from the DRDO detained in Pune for giving a Pakistani espionage agent classified information

05-05-2023 : The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) recently detained a prominent scientist working for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Pune, India, on suspicion of exchanging sensitive material with a Pakistani intelligence agent. The accused had been using video calls and WhatsApp communications to communicate with a representative of the Pakistani intelligence service, according to ATS officials. The accused had been drawn into a honeytrap, the ATS official added. The scientist, who held a senior position with the DRDO, was taken into custody on Wednesday.

The ATS release revealed that the scientist had misused his position and shared sensitive information with the enemy country, despite being aware that such actions could pose a significant threat to national security. The Maharashtra ATS has registered a case under the relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act, and the investigation is ongoing.

This incident highlights the grave dangers of espionage and the vital importance of safeguarding confidential information. It is crucial that the security agencies remain vigilant against such malicious activities that could jeopardize national security. The government must take stringent measures to ensure that all sensitive information is adequately protected and that employees entrusted with classified data are thoroughly vetted and held accountable for any breaches.
