Sensex, Nifty Extend Recovery as Strong Earnings and Global Cues Lift Investor Sentiment

Domestic equities rebound on encouraging quarterly results and improved global sentiment, while rising petroleum prices and geopolitical uncertainty remain key concerns for investors.

Indian stock markets maintained a positive bias towards the end of October, with benchmark indices recovering from recent losses as investors responded to better than expected corporate performance and improving global cues.

The recovery gathered momentum on Thursday, October 29, when the BSE Sensex climbed 905 points, or 1.24 per cent, to close at 74,151.04. The NSE Nifty 50 advanced 237.90 points, or 1.05 per cent, ending the session at 22,936.75.

The gains followed a period of weakness in domestic equities, during which investors remained cautious because of international uncertainty, elevated energy prices and concerns over the outlook for global economic growth.

Market participants attributed Thursday’s rebound to a combination of stronger second-quarter earnings, easing crude oil prices, expectations of diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran, and renewed interest from foreign institutional investors.

The rally was broad-based, with 39 stocks in the Nifty 50 ending higher and only 11 registering losses. Banking, real estate, fast-moving consumer goods and selected infrastructure companies attracted buying interest.

Adani Ports emerged among the leading gainers, rising 6.29 per cent to Rs 1,872, while Adani Enterprises advanced 5.17 per cent to Rs 2,607.90. Eternal gained 3.63 per cent, while Power Grid Corporation also recorded significant gains.

Kotak Mahindra Bank and Adani Enterprises were among the major contributors to the benchmark indices’ upward movement.

The real estate sector led the broader market rally, with the Nifty Realty index gaining 2.75 per cent. The FMCG index advanced 2.34 per cent, while the Nifty PSU Bank index rose 2.20 per cent.

The performance indicated that investors were selectively increasing exposure to companies with relatively resilient earnings prospects and sectors expected to benefit from domestic demand.

Market experts described the recovery as encouraging but cautioned against assuming that the recent weakness had completely ended.

Apurva Sheth, head of research at Samco Securities, described the market movement as a strong rebound and suggested that the Nifty could move towards the 23,500 level if the positive momentum continued. However, he also indicated that investors should remain prepared for possible short-term fluctuations.

Siddhartha Khemka, head of research for wealth management at Motilal Oswal, said expectations of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in West Asia had contributed to easing crude prices and improving market sentiment.

He also pointed to improving domestic growth expectations and intermittent foreign institutional investor buying as factors supporting the recovery.

Despite the gains, foreign portfolio investors remained net sellers on Thursday, offloading equities worth Rs 943.6 crore. Domestic institutional investors, however, purchased shares worth Rs 1,924.41 crore, providing support to the market.

The difference between foreign and domestic investment activity highlighted the importance of domestic institutional participation in cushioning the impact of overseas fund outflows.

The broader indices also reflected a mixed picture. While the benchmark indices advanced, investors remained selective in smaller companies, indicating that confidence had not returned uniformly across the market.

On Friday, October 30, domestic equities opened with modest gains as information technology stocks and selected companies reporting quarterly results attracted buying interest.

By 9:52 am, the Nifty 50 was trading at 22,987.40, up 0.24 per cent, while the Sensex stood at 74,332.39, gaining 0.25 per cent.

The early movement followed Thursday’s strong rally, but higher crude oil prices continued to remain a major concern. Brent crude was reported at around USD 116.20 per barrel, raising questions about the potential impact of energy costs on India’s inflation outlook and corporate profitability.

India, as a major importer of crude oil, remains particularly vulnerable to prolonged increases in international petroleum prices. Higher energy costs can increase transportation expenses, raise manufacturing costs and put pressure on household consumption.

Companies operating in sectors such as aviation, logistics, chemicals and manufacturing could face additional cost pressures if crude prices remain elevated.

The information technology sector provided support to Friday’s early trading, with IT shares gaining around 1.7 per cent. Selected stocks also benefited from company-specific developments and quarterly earnings announcements.

Trent shares rose around 6 per cent following its results, while InterGlobe Aviation advanced approximately 4 per cent. The gains demonstrated that positive company performance continued to influence individual stocks even as the broader market remained sensitive to international developments.

Investors were also tracking quarterly financial results from major companies, including Reliance Industries, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Bharat Electronics.

The results were expected to provide further insight into demand conditions, operating margins, investment plans and business outlooks across important sectors.

Coal India was among the companies attracting attention after reporting a 57 per cent increase in profit after tax to Rs 6,547 crore for the second quarter of the financial year 2026-27, according to its reported results. However, the company’s shares faced selling pressure after its performance fell short of market expectations.

The contrast between corporate earnings and share-price movements highlighted the importance of investor expectations in determining market reactions. Even when companies report higher profits, their shares can decline if the results do not meet analysts’ forecasts.

Global monetary policy also remained an important factor influencing investor decisions. The United States Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged at its October policy meeting, a decision that helped remove some immediate uncertainty from international financial markets.

Investors are closely monitoring the direction of interest rates in major economies because monetary policy influences global capital flows, currency movements and demand for emerging-market assets.

Any indication of future rate reductions could improve the attractiveness of emerging markets, including India. However, persistent inflation and geopolitical risks may restrict the pace of monetary easing.

The domestic market’s performance towards the end of October also reflected the influence of foreign investment trends. Although overseas investors had resumed purchases during some recent sessions, their participation remained inconsistent.

The ability of Indian markets to sustain their recovery will therefore depend on several factors, including corporate earnings, domestic economic growth, crude oil prices, foreign fund flows and developments in international relations.

Analysts believe that the resilience of domestic consumption and the financial performance of listed companies will remain important supports for equities. At the same time, investors are likely to monitor energy prices and geopolitical developments before making fresh commitments.

The Nifty remained significantly below its 52-week high even after Thursday’s gains, suggesting that the broader correction had not been fully reversed.

With the October trading month approaching its close, the benchmarks were on course to register monthly gains of approximately 1.6 per cent for the Nifty and 2.5 per cent for the Sensex, potentially ending their two-month losing streak.

The latest movement suggests that domestic equities are attempting to regain stability, although the sustainability of the recovery will depend on whether improving corporate performance can offset continuing global economic and geopolitical challenges.
