Cape Town, Sep 27: At least 27 people were killed and dozens injured in two separate mass shootings near Johannesburg and Cape Town, South African police said on Sunday.
In the first incident, 17 people died after gunmen opened fire at a bar in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, on Saturday night. Police said eight suspects armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols were involved in the attack, while at least 15 people suffered gunshot wounds.
A second shooting occurred at a store in Lwandle, near Cape Town, at around 1 am on Sunday. Ten people were killed and another 11 injured, according to police. Authorities said several suspects were being sought in connection with the attack but did not specify how many.
The incidents occurred only days after another deadly shooting near Durban, where three gunmen attacked a house party, killing 11 people, including a pregnant woman.
Police said no arrests had been made in connection with either of the latest attacks.
South Africa has long faced serious challenges from violent crime, including gun-related violence. The succession of mass shootings in recent days has renewed concern over public safety and the continued threat posed by armed attacks in communities.
