Colombo, Feb 20 : The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally cautioned Shadab Khan over his remarks directed at former national players, urging him to maintain restraint in public statements during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The advisory followed Pakistan’s 61-run loss to India in the group stage, which drew strong criticism from ex-cricketers. Mohammad Yousuf described the current period as one of the lowest phases in Pakistan cricket and suggested senior members of the squad consider stepping aside. Shahid Afridi also called for changes, recommending that experienced players make way for emerging talent.
After delivering a standout all round display against Namibia scoring 36 off 22 balls and claiming 3/13 in a dominant 102-run win Shadab addressed the criticism. He remarked that while former players are legends entitled to opinions, the present team has also achieved significant milestones, including a historic World Cup win over India.
According to reports, team manager Naveed Cheema conveyed the board’s directive, reminding the vice-captain to exercise caution in his language. The PCB reportedly emphasized that senior figures of Pakistan cricket, including his father in law Saqlain Mushtaq, deserve respect in public discourse.
Sources indicated that other squad members have also been advised to keep their remarks measured, with disciplinary steps possible if lines are crossed. Saqlain termed the comments “unwanted,” while Kamran Akmal urged greater responsibility when speaking about former players.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s media interactions have remained tightly managed throughout the tournament. Players were kept away from press duties ahead of the high-profile India clash, and media officials intervened during a subsequent pre-match conference to limit tactical discussions.
Pakistan are set to open their Super Eight campaign against New Zealand in Colombo, followed by fixtures against England and Sri Lanka later in the week.
