Shreyas Iyer discharged after successful surgery, to undergo recovery in Sydney

BCCI says India’s ODI vice-captain recovering well after spleen injury; expected to be out for two months

India, Oct 01 : India’s ODI vice captain Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital following surgery for a spleen injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Saturday.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure, and he has undergone appropriate medical management,” the BCCI said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
The board further stated that Iyer is “now stable and recovering well,” adding that specialists in both Sydney and India are satisfied with his progress.
The BCCI expressed gratitude to Dr. Koroush Haghighi and Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala for their roles in Iyer’s treatment.
Iyer, who was injured while attempting a running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling, had been in regular contact with friends and teammates since Tuesday (October 28) and was reportedly eating home-cooked meals.
India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav had earlier provided an update on Iyer’s condition ahead of the ongoing T20I series against Australia.
The 30 year old cricketer will continue his recovery in Sydney under medical supervision and is expected to be out of action for at least two months before returning to India once fit to travel.
