Ahmedabad, Oct 4: In a landmark leadership transition, opener Shubman Gill has been named captain of the Indian ODI team for the upcoming tour of Australia, replacing senior batter Rohit Sharma at the helm.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-member squad on Saturday, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retaining their places, signalling a shift towards youth leadership while maintaining the balance of experience. Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been appointed vice-captain for the three-match series.
To manage workload, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested, while promising left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal makes a return to the ODI setup following consistent performances in T20 internationals.
The ODI series will be played between October 19 and 25 across Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne, followed by a five-match T20 series.
