Shubman Gill Ruled Out of First Test After Neck Injury, Confirms BCCI

India captain Shubman Gill suffers neck spasm on Day 2, stretchered to hospital; BCCI confirms he won’t play further in the Kolkata Test.

India, Nov 16 :  Captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens after suffering a neck spasm during Day 2’s morning session. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development ahead of Day 3, stating that Gill was taken to a Kolkata hospital for medical examination and is currently under observation.

Gill, 26, had retired hurt for four after playing a sweep shot off Simon Harmer in the 35th over. Immediately after the stroke, he clutched the left side of his neck in visible discomfort. The Indian team physio Kamlesh Jain attended to him on the field, after which Gill walked off, unable to move his neck freely.

He did not return to bat or field for the rest of the day, with vice-captain Rishabh Pant stepping in as stand-in skipper.

Broadcast visuals later revealed that Gill’s neck discomfort may have begun before play, as he was seen grimacing while performing neck-loosening drills alongside the physio and support staff.

Following the close of Day 2, Gill was stretchered out of Eden Gardens wearing a neck brace and admitted to a private hospital designated for the match. He was accompanied by the Indian team doctor and a security liaison officer. His father, Lakhwinder Gill, who was present at the venue, also joined him at the hospital.

This is not the first time Gill has battled neck-related issues. He missed India’s first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru in October 2024 due to a stiff neck and was also ruled out of the second T20I against Sri Lanka in July 2024 with a similar complaint.

The BCCI has stated that Gill will continue to be monitored by the medical team, with his availability for the remainder of the series yet to be assessed.
