SMART CITY PLANNING AND OPEN SPACES

Editorial

Urbanization in India has led to the loss of open spaces in cities, such as parks, playgrounds, and public plazas, resulting in a reduction of green cover, biodiversity, and recreational spaces. This trend is concerning, as the loss of open spaces has negative impacts on urban communities, including health, environment, and social well-being. The reduced availability of green cover and recreational spaces can lead to increased stress, and anxiety, resulting in negative impacts on health. Additionally, it can reduce opportunities for physical activity, contributing to a sedentary lifestyle that increases the risk of obesity, heart disease, and other chronic health conditions. Furthermore, the loss of green cover and open spaces can lead to increased air and water pollution, further harming public health.  Furthermore, the loss of open spaces can contribute to air and water pollution and the urban heat island effect. The loss of open spaces can also reduce opportunities for social interaction and community building and lead to a decrease in the economic value of urban areas. It is essential to prioritize the preservation and creation of open spaces in urban areas. Urban planners and policymakers must enforce policies and regulations that require developers to allocate a certain percentage of land for open spaces in new developments. Innovative solutions such as rooftop gardens and green walls can also be implemented to increase green cover in urban areas. Citizen participation in the process of creating and maintaining open spaces in their communities is essential for their sustainability.

Smart city planning can play a crucial role in incorporating open spaces. The first step can be to map existing open spaces and identify areas where new open spaces can be created, using GIS and satellite imagery. Smart technology can be integrated into open spaces to enhance their functionality and management, including sensors that monitor air quality, water usage, and temperature. Smart lighting and irrigation systems can also be installed to reduce energy and water consumption. Open spaces can be designed to serve multiple purposes and meet the needs of diverse communities. Fitness facilities, children’s play areas, locations for cultural events, and grounds for neighbourhood meetings can all be found in parks. They can also serve as green infrastructure, promoting ecological benefits such as improving air quality, reducing the urban heat island effect, and promoting biodiversity. Using native plant species, rain gardens, and green roofs can help achieve this. It is essential to ensure open spaces are easily accessible to residents, prioritizing the creation of safe and accessible pedestrian and cycling routes that connect open spaces to residential and commercial areas. Community engagement is critical, ensuring that open spaces reflect the needs and desires of local residents.

Incorporating open spaces into smart city planning is crucial to creating liveable, healthy, and sustainable cities. By prioritizing the creation and preservation of open spaces, smart city planning can promote physical and mental well-being, social interaction, and environmental sustainability. Urban planners and policymakers need to take immediate action to preserve and create open spaces in urban areas to ensure sustainable and thriving communities. Citizens must also take an active role in this process, working collaboratively to create and maintain open spaces that meet their needs and promote a healthy and sustainable urban environment.

As Jammu and Kashmir’s urban areas continue to grow rapidly, it is essential that the Jammu Smart City Authority and the Jammu and Kashmir government prioritize the preservation and creation of open spaces in urban areas. To address the reduction of open spaces in Jammu, policymakers and planners can consider implementing policies and regulations that require developers to allocate a certain percentage of land for open spaces in new developments. Additionally, innovative solutions can be implemented to increase green cover in urban areas. Community engagement is critical to the success of open spaces. The programme can incorporate community input into the design and management of open spaces, ensuring that they reflect the needs and desires of local residents. Therefore, the Jammu Smart City Authority and the Jammu and Kashmir government should take steps to ensure that open spaces are preserved and created in the urban areas of Jammu.
