Snow Accumulation Blocks Mughal Road Clearance Operations Underway

Authorities advise commuters to avoid travel as fresh snowfall disrupts traffic between south Kashmir and Pir Panjal

SHOPIAN, Jan 6: The historic Mughal Road in Jammu & Kashmir remains closed for vehicular traffic following overnight snowfall in higher reaches, officials said on Tuesday. The closure comes amid renewed winter activity, leading to significant snow accumulation along this vital inter district route connecting south Kashmir with the Pir Panjal region.

Officials reported that nearly four inches of fresh snow have accumulated on several stretches, rendering the road unsafe for movement. The snowfall has added to already challenging winter conditions, resulting in continuous blockage.

Snow clearance operations underway

Teams from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have been deployed, and heavy machinery is in action to remove snow and restore connectivity. Officials cautioned that it will take some time before the road is declared fit for traffic.

Authorities advised locals and commuters to avoid travel on the Mughal Road until clearance work is fully completed and an official reopening notice is issued. The road is prone to frequent winter closures due to heavy snowfall and avalanches, and its reopening largely depends on weather conditions.

Officials added that continuous monitoring is underway, and further updates will be shared once the situation improves and traffic movement is possible.
