Srinagar, 01-02-2025: Fresh snowfall in the higher reaches and rainfall in the plains have brought much-needed relief to the Kashmir valley, effectively ending the prolonged dry spell that had persisted for weeks. The Meteorological Department has predicted the possibility of more precipitation over the next four days, offering hope for improved water levels and a replenished winter season.
Intermittent snowfall was reported in the upper reaches of Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, and Sonmarg, while traces of snow were also observed in some parts of South Kashmir during the early morning hours. Meanwhile, Srinagar and its adjoining areas have been experiencing steady rainfall since last evening. The precipitation has significantly impacted the region’s weather conditions, causing a noticeable drop in maximum temperatures. However, the minimum temperature in Srinagar remained above freezing point, recording 0.8 degrees Celsius last night, which is 1.4 degrees above the seasonal average.
Despite the widespread rise in minimum temperatures across most of Kashmir, the renowned Gulmarg skiing resort in North Kashmir stood as an exception, with the mercury plummeting to minus 7.2 degrees Celsius. The fresh snowfall in the higher altitudes has also raised expectations among tourists and winter sports enthusiasts, who are likely to benefit from improved snow conditions in the coming days.
Authorities and weather officials continue to monitor the situation closely, as the forecast suggests the likelihood of continued precipitation. The recent spell of snow and rain is expected to contribute positively to Kashmir’s winter season, helping to restore ecological balance and mitigate concerns over water shortages in the valley.
