Mumbai, Feb 18: Former actor Somy Ali has expressed deep concern following the hospitalisation of veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, describing him as a father figure who once welcomed her into his home like family.
A Bond Beyond the Film Industry
Responding to news of his health, Somy shared an emotional note on Instagram, recalling the time she lived at his residence. Posting a photograph of Salim Khan alongside Salma Khan and Helen, she reflected on the warmth and guidance she received during that period.
While many recognise Salim Khan for shaping the careers of stars such as Amitabh Bachchan and co-writing landmark films like Sholay, Somy said she remembers him most for his compassion and mentorship. She noted that he treated her as a daughter, involving her in family discussions that extended beyond cinema into life and spirituality.
Lessons That Stayed With Her
According to Somy, their conversations often centred on faith and humanity. She said he encouraged respect for all religions and believed that storytelling must be rooted in honesty. Those teachings, she added, left a lasting impression on her personal and professional outlook.
Calling his influence transformative, she wrote that while his writing created cinematic milestones, his kindness shaped individuals around him.
Hospitalisation and Family Presence
Salim Khan was admitted to Lilavati Hospital on February 17 after reportedly experiencing swelling. His son, actor Salman Khan, rushed to be by his side. Daughters Alvira Khan Agnihotri and Arpita Khan, along with Arpita’s husband Aayush Sharma, were also seen at the hospital.
The celebrated writer, who turned 90 last November, remains under medical care.
From Actor to Iconic Writer
Arriving in Mumbai in the 1950s with acting aspirations, Salim Khan later transitioned to screenwriting. His collaboration with Javed Akhtar as the duo Salim–Javed redefined mainstream Hindi cinema during the 1970s and early 1980s, delivering enduring classics such as Deewaar, Zanjeer, and Don.
As tributes pour in, Somy Ali’s heartfelt message highlights a lesser-known, deeply personal side of the legendary writer.
