Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised After Delhi Police Intervention on 21st Day of Hunger Strike

Delhi Police shifts the climate activist to hospital following medical advice and High Court directions, while urging demonstrators to conclude the ongoing protest peacefully.

NEW DELHI, July 18: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to a hospital on Saturday after his health reportedly worsened during the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in the national capital. The move came after medical experts advised immediate treatment, and authorities acted in accordance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court.

According to Delhi Police, Wangchuk’s physical condition had deteriorated significantly after three weeks of fasting, making medical intervention necessary. Officials stated that the decision to transfer him to a healthcare facility was taken solely on medical grounds to safeguard his well being.

In an official statement, the police said the action was carried out in compliance with judicial instructions and based on the recommendations of doctors monitoring the activist’s condition. Authorities emphasised that ensuring timely medical attention had become essential given the prolonged fast and the associated health risks.

During the transfer, some supporters present at the protest site attempted to resist the police action, resulting in a brief period of tension. However, police personnel exercised restraint and managed the situation without any major law-and-order issues, successfully escorting Wangchuk to the hospital for treatment.

Delhi Police also appealed to demonstrators gathered at Jantar Mantar to bring the protest to a peaceful conclusion. Officials urged participants to vacate the venue voluntarily while maintaining public order and respecting legal directions.

The hunger strike, which has continued for three weeks, has drawn widespread public attention and support from various social groups and activists. Wangchuk has been pressing for policy measures related to environmental conservation, sustainable development, and constitutional safeguards for the Himalayan region.

Medical experts have repeatedly cautioned that extended fasting can lead to severe complications, including dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, weakness, and organ-related health concerns. Hospital authorities are expected to closely monitor Wangchuk’s condition in the coming days.

The latest development has intensified discussions over the ongoing protest, with supporters expressing concern about Wangchuk’s health while calling for constructive dialogue between the administration and representatives of the movement.

As of Saturday evening, Delhi Police reiterated that public safety and the activist’s health remained their primary priorities and appealed for continued peace at the protest site.
