Sonu Nigam calls AR Rahman ‘not very friendly’, defends composer’s introverted personality

Singer says Rahman may appear distant but is deeply respectful, describing him as an introvert devoted to music and prayer amid renewed industry debate.

Mumbai, Feb 12 : Music composer AR Rahman has recently found himself at the centre of debate after speaking about a perceived “communal” undercurrent in the film industry and suggesting it may have affected the volume of work coming his way. Amid the discussion, an older interview of singer Sonu Nigam has resurfaced, offering insight into Rahman’s personality.

In a conversation with O2 India, Nigam described Rahman as someone who keeps to himself and does not easily form personal bonds. He noted that the composer rarely opens up and appears focused almost entirely on his craft. According to Nigam, their interactions during a US tour were limited to polite greetings rather than extended conversations.

However, the singer clarified that Rahman’s reserved nature should not be mistaken for arrogance or unfriendliness. He portrayed the Oscar-winning composer as detached from gossip and uninterested in other people’s affairs, adding that this disposition reflects his individuality rather than a flaw.

Nigam emphasised that Rahman is respectful in his conduct and avoids speaking ill of others. He added that the composer remains dedicated to his work and spiritual life, suggesting that his quiet demeanour stems from discipline and introspection rather than social distance.

The resurfaced remarks come shortly after Rahman spoke to BBC Asian Network about shifting dynamics within the Hindi film industry. He indicated that changes in power structures  and possibly communal bias may have influenced professional opportunities, though he acknowledged that such sentiments were not directly expressed to him.

Rahman maintained that he does not actively chase projects, preferring instead to let his work attract opportunities. He added that spending more time with family is a positive outcome when fewer assignments come his way, underscoring his belief that sincerity ultimately brings the work one deserves.
