Canada, Nov 18 : Sophie Grégoire Trudeau has opened up about how she is processing former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new relationship with global pop icon Katy Perry.
Speaking on the podcast ‘Arlene Is Alone’, Sophie shared her honest reflections on healing, emotional awareness, and choosing peace amid intense public scrutiny.
She said it is “completely normal” to feel something when an ex-partner begins a new life chapter especially one that unfolds so publicly.
“We’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal,” she said. “How you react to stuff is your decision. So I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise.”
Sophie explained that she continues to experience the full range of human emotions crying, laughing, getting upset but aims to stay mindful of the gap between emotion and reaction.
“Does that mean I don’t have emotions? That I don’t cry, scream, laugh? No. But it’s my decision after that, between the emotion and the reaction.”
Her comments come shortly after Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry’s first official appearance as a couple in Paris on October 25 during Perry’s birthday celebration. Their earlier outing in July, walking their dogs in Canada, had already sparked global curiosity.
Sophie and Trudeau announced their separation in 2023 after 18 years of marriage. Now 50, Sophie said she is learning that people “meet life from where they are inside,” a lesson that helps her protect her peace and happiness.
“It’s your choice to see that and be like, ‘How am I going to let that affect my happiness?’”
Despite the changes in their lives, she emphasized that she and Trudeau remain united in raising their children Xavier, 18, Ella-Grace, 16, and Hadrien, 11.
“We have separate lives, but we have one family life,” she said. “Our family is our greatest creation and we’re going to feed it together, no matter if we’re on different life paths.”
