DURBAN, Sept 24: Matthew Breetzke struck a commanding century as South Africa defeated Australia by 67 runs in the opening ODI of their three-match series at Kingsmead on Thursday.
South Africa posted 297 for eight from their allotted 50 overs before dismissing Australia for 230 in 44.5 overs. The result gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the series and marked a strong beginning to their home ODI campaign.
Breetzke was the central figure in South Africa’s innings, producing a superb 112 to provide the foundation for a competitive total. His innings helped the home side recover from periods when Australia managed to keep the scoring under control.
The South African opener combined patience with attacking strokeplay as he moved through the gears. His century was his second in ODI cricket and came at an important stage for the hosts, who were looking to establish a strong platform against the reigning World Cup champions.

Breetzke’s century will also strengthen his position in the side after he demonstrated that he can produce a substantial innings in a high-profile ODI against a strong opponent. The hosts’ lower-order contributions were equally significant. Jansen’s 75 ensured South Africa did not depend entirely on one batter, while the bowlers completed the job after Australia had made a strong start.
The victory also provides South Africa with an early advantage in a series that gives both sides an opportunity to fine-tune their 50-over combinations.
Australia will now need to regroup quickly. The batting collapse was the defining issue in Durban, with the side unable to maintain partnerships once South Africa’s bowlers gained control.
