Srinagar, Oct 31: Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Friday assured “appropriate action” against a journalist who uploaded a video on social media claiming that a National Conference MLA was “watching reels” during the House proceedings.
The matter came up as soon as the Assembly session began on Friday morning, when Karnah MLA Javaid Mirchal raised concern over the viral video circulating online.
“I was scrolling through my mobile during the proceedings yesterday. A journalist shot it and posted it on social media, alleging that I was wasting time,” Mirchal said, expressing distress over the incident.
The video, reportedly shared on a popular news portal’s Facebook page with nearly a million followers, has garnered over 63,000 views. Mirchal said that since the video went viral, his constituents have been calling him continuously, and he “could not sleep the entire night.”
Supporting his colleague, NC MLA from Gurez, Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi, said that legislators are planning to move a privilege motion against the journalist responsible for posting the video.
Responding to the issue, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather assured the members that “appropriate action will be taken against the defaulter,” emphasizing that the dignity and decorum of the House must be maintained at all times.
