Sri Lankan Opposition Leader Supports India’s Push for Permanent UN Security Council Seat

Sajith Premadasa highlights India’s role in global politics and emphasizes strategic India-Sri Lanka ties

New Delhi, Nov 6: Sri Lanka’s Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has expressed support for India’s long-standing bid for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), calling it a recognition of “global power realities.”

In an interview with ANI during his visit to India, Premadasa said, “India’s inclusion in the UNSC would be a recognition of the practical realities of international politics. You cannot discard India. You cannot marginalize India.” He added that he has long advocated for India’s permanent membership and will continue to support the effort.

Premadasa’s comments come amid India’s ongoing push for UNSC reforms to better represent emerging powers and developing nations. He also highlighted the importance of Sri Lanka maintaining strong relations with India while continuing diplomatic engagement with all countries.

“We believe in a special strategic relationship with India. At the same time, our goal is to act as a mediator to promote peace, harmony, and security in the region,” he said.

During his visit, Premadasa met India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss bilateral ties under India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy. Jaishankar tweeted, “Pleased to meet Leader of Opposition @sajithpremadasa of Sri Lanka. Discussed India-Sri Lanka relations. India will always be supportive of progress and development in Sri Lanka.”

Premadasa also addressed the long-standing fishermen issue between India and Sri Lanka, urging a structured, law-based approach to resolve disputes. “The fishing issue is very important. Both countries must cooperate to establish a proper, workable framework based on fact and international law, including UNCLOS,” he said. He stressed the need to balance livelihood concerns with legal and sustainable fishing practices to prevent illegal, unregulated, and unreported activities.

The remarks come amid continuing tensions over Tamil Nadu fishermen entering Sri Lankan waters near Katchatheevu, often resulting in arrests and maritime disputes.
