Hyderabad, Jan 30: In a disturbing case of alleged animal cruelty, around 100 stray dogs were reportedly killed over the past 10 days in Thimmaipally village of Nagarkurnool district in Telangana, prompting the registration of a First Information Report (FIR), police said.
The incident has sparked outrage among animal welfare groups and local residents. A formal complaint was lodged on January 27 at the Charapaka Police Station by Mudavath Preethi, an Animal Cruelty Prevention Assistant with the Stray Animal Foundation of India.
According to the FIR, the dogs were allegedly killed by administering poisonous injections. The complaint named the village Sarpanch and Panchayat Secretary, accusing them of orchestrating the killings within the gram panchayat’s jurisdiction.
The FIR stated that a recorded conversation between animal welfare activist Adukapuram Goutham and the Sarpanch allegedly included an admission that hired individuals were paid ₹18,000 to carry out the killings. Another conversation cited in the complaint claimed the dogs were poisoned over a period of several days.
Police said preliminary information suggests that a gram panchayat worker removed the carcasses, which were reportedly disposed of about two kilometres away from the village.
Animal rights activist Goutham condemned the incident and demanded strict legal action against those responsible, urging authorities to ensure stronger enforcement of animal protection laws to prevent such acts in the future.
Police officials said an investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
