Sunita Williams on Conflict and Humanity: ‘One Planet, No Boundaries’

Speaking at the Kerala Literature Festival, the Indian origin NASA astronaut said Earth appears as a single shared home from orbit, urging people to rethink divisions, conflict and coexistence.

India, Jan 23 : Indian origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams on Thursday urged people to look beyond conflict and divisions, saying the view of Earth from space makes it clear that humanity shares one common home.

Addressing a packed audience at the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF) in Kozhikode, Williams said the absence of visible borders from orbit raises fundamental questions about why humans continue to fight. She remarked that Earth, when seen from space, appears unified and fragile, reinforcing the need for coexistence rather than confrontation.

Williams explained that astronauts gain a unique perspective while in orbit, where national boundaries fade and the planet stands out as a single living system. She said this realisation often leads to reflection on shared responsibility toward each other and the planet.

Later, speaking at a session titled “Dreams Reach Orbit: Meet the Astronaut Who Touched the Sky”, Williams described the experience of observing Earth from space as deeply humbling. She said seeing the planet’s beauty and complexity makes one pause and reflect on the miracle of human existence.

Responding to a question on spirituality, Williams spoke about carrying a Ganesha idol and a copy of the Bhagavad Gita into space. She said science and spirituality need not be seen as opposing forces, adding that belief in a higher power helps make sense of human existence and daily life.

Williams also noted that her visit to India coinciding with the announcement of her retirement felt symbolic, as it allowed her to share messages of inspiration and reflection at a meaningful moment in her life.

She arrived in Kozhikode on Wednesday night and will participate in multiple sessions at the festival until January 25. Her schedule includes an interaction with children at the KLF Children’s Session and a public conversation moderated by journalist Barkha Dutt.

Sunita Williams has remained in the global spotlight following her extended stay aboard the International Space Station during the Boeing Starliner test mission, which faced technical delays. Her journey continues to inspire audiences worldwide, particularly as an astronaut of Indian origin.
