New Delhi, Sep 20 : The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to consider institutionalising the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) process as part of efforts to create a more permanent and standardised system for the country’s medical entrance examination.
The development comes as a high-powered panel headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani works on recommendations for structural reforms in the examination system. The panel has been examining issues related to the conduct, security and administration of major entrance tests.
The court’s observations came amid continuing scrutiny of the National Testing Agency and the mechanisms used to conduct national-level examinations. The bench has also indicated the importance of creating a stable institutional structure for the examination process.
Separately, the Supreme Court has decided to visit the National Testing Agency’s new headquarters in Delhi to assess its infrastructure and manpower. The court was informed that the agency has moved to a permanent setup with strengthened leadership and security arrangements.
The proceedings have also focused on the need for greater use of technology in examinations, including computer-based testing and digitisation of question paper management.
The court has sought further information on the progress of the high-powered task force and directed that the relevant affidavit be made available publicly. The panel is expected to submit an interim report on proposed reforms by the end of September.
The developments are part of a broader examination-system review aimed at addressing concerns surrounding the administration and security of major national entrance examinations.
