Suspended Congress MLA Mamkootathil absconds following FIR in sexual assault case

New Delhi. Nov 28 : Suspended Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil is reportedly “on the run” after a sexual assault FIR was filed against him at Valiyamala Police Station in Kerala. The complainant, a young woman, has alleged that Mamkootathil sexually exploited her under the pretext of marriage and coerced her into taking abortion pills, which she reportedly consumed under threat during a video call, leading to serious health complications.

The woman sought treatment at a government hospital, now identified by police, while investigators trace Mamkootathil, who is believed to have gone into hiding, possibly leaving Kerala. His mobile phone, previously switched off, was activated during ongoing searches in Palakkad and Pathanamthitta. Authorities are also questioning a businessman from Adoor, an associate of Mamkootathil, accused of delivering the abortion pills.

The case, initially registered as a zero FIR, has been transferred to Nemom Police Station, as the alleged offences fall under its jurisdiction. Charges include sexual exploitation under false promise of marriage and forced abortion.

Mamkootathil is reportedly exploring legal remedies to secure anticipatory bail, consulting lawyers in Kochi and considering approaches to either the Thiruvananthapuram District Sessions Court or the Kerala High Court. Meanwhile, police plan to move the Neyyattinkara Court to record the complainant’s confidential statement under Section 164 CrPC.

The Congress party had suspended Mamkootathil in August following similar allegations. Veteran legislator Ramesh Chennithala said, “Now let the law take its course.”

Former Kerala IPS officer R. Sreelekha, now a BJP state leader, expressed support for the survivor on social media, emphasizing the need for prompt legal action and cautioning against delays that could endanger victims.
