SRINAGAR, June 19: A suspended Jammu and Kashmir Police constable was taken into custody after law enforcement personnel allegedly recovered a heroin like substance during a late night checking operation in Srinagar, officials said on Friday.
The accused has been identified as Asif Rehman Reshi, a resident of Bonpora in the Batamaloo area of Srinagar. According to officials, he had been serving in the Jammu and Kashmir Police force but has remained under suspension since 2025.
The incident came to light during a routine naka checking operation conducted by personnel from Police Station Shergari at Alochi Bagh Bund. During the operation, officers intercepted the suspect and carried out a personal search as part of the ongoing anti-narcotics surveillance drive.
Authorities stated that approximately seven grams of a substance suspected to be heroin was recovered during the search. Following the recovery, the individual was immediately detained and the seized material was taken into police custody for further legal proceedings.
The Srinagar Drug Recovery case has prompted the registration of a formal case at Police Station Shergari. Police have registered FIR No. 32/2026 under Sections 8 and 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Officials said the investigation will focus on determining the origin of the recovered substance and identifying any possible links to a larger narcotics distribution network operating in the region.
Law enforcement agencies have intensified anti-drug operations across Kashmir in recent years as part of a broader campaign to curb the trafficking and consumption of illegal narcotics. Regular checkpoints, surprise inspections, and intelligence-based operations have resulted in several arrests and seizures.
Police sources indicated that investigators are examining all aspects of the case, including potential supply routes and contacts associated with the accused. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict enforcement against drug-related activities and urged citizens to cooperate with police by sharing information about suspicious activities in their localities.
The investigation remains underway, and officials have not ruled out further arrests as efforts continue to uncover any broader connections linked to the recovery.
