Sydney Sweeney says her role in ‘Christy’ hit close to home, reveals film exposes the real cost of domestic violence

The ‘Euphoria’ star opens up about portraying boxing legend Christy Martin, calling the experience deeply personal and empowering.

Sydney, Oct 29 : Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney is drawing attention for the emotional depth she brings to her latest film, Christy, where she portrays legendary boxer Christy Martin   a trailblazer in women’s boxing and a survivor of domestic violence.

The biopic charts Martin’s remarkable journey from a small town girl in West Virginia to one of the most feared fighters in the sport, while also delving into the harrowing abuse she suffered at the hands of her husband, James “Jim” Martin, who stabbed and shot her in 2010. Christy’s miraculous survival turned her into a symbol of resilience both inside and outside the ring.

For Sweeney, the role was more than just another performance. “It’s a very personal issue that’s important to me,” she told People. “I hope that through Christy and her story, it can raise more awareness.”

The Euphoria and Anyone But You actress said she resonated with Christy’s spirit and strength. “For Christy, the ring was her escape  it’s where she felt free,” Sweeney explained. “I feel the same way about acting. On set, everything else goes quiet. That’s my ring.”

Directed by David Michôd, the film portrays both the triumphs and traumas of Martin’s life  from her explosive career to her turbulent marriage and struggles with identity. Co-starring Ben Foster as Jim Martin, Christy sheds light on the emotional cost of abuse and the courage it takes to reclaim one’s life.

Sweeney, who also serves as a producer, said working closely with Martin herself was transformative. “Having her on set was powerful. I wanted her there to guide me, to make sure I got her story right,” she said.

Reflecting on the experience, Sweeney added, “Playing Christy taught me to stand up for myself and feel stronger in every part of my life. We both fight our own fights in different rings.”
