T20 World Cup 2026: India the Team to Beat, Says England’s Will Jacks

England all rounder calls hosts India tournament favourites while expressing confidence ahead of opener against Nepal in Mumbai.

India, Feb 08 : England all rounder Will Jacks has identified India as the strongest contender in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, stating that playing at home gives the co-hosts a clear edge in the competition.

Speaking before England’s opening clash against Nepal at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Jacks said his side enters the tournament with belief after steady improvement under captain Harry Brook. He credited recent success, including white-ball series victories over Sri Lanka, for boosting team morale.

Despite the confidence, Jacks stressed that the global event leaves little room for complacency, pointing out the depth of talent across participating teams.

England wary of strong competition

The all-rounder acknowledged that while England have progressed over the past year, the World Cup presents a different challenge altogether. He described India as the favourites, noting that conditions and crowd support often play a decisive role in major tournaments.

Jacks added that consistent performances leading into the event have helped England build momentum, but results on the field will ultimately determine how far they advance.

Early momentum crucial

Placed in Group C alongside West Indies, Italy, Nepal, and Scotland, England are aiming for a winning start. Jacks emphasised that every group-stage fixture carries weight, making it essential for teams to settle quickly and avoid costly slip-ups.

He also welcomed the expansion of the tournament to 20 teams, calling it a positive step for cricket’s global growth. Highlighting Nepal’s rapid development, he suggested that emerging sides are increasingly capable of challenging established nations.

IPL exposure boosts familiarity

Having featured for the Mumbai Indians in the 2025 Indian Premier League, Jacks said prior experience in Indian conditions has helped him feel at ease returning to the country. Familiarity with venues, surfaces, and match atmospheres, he explained, allows him to concentrate fully on performance rather than adaptation.

England XI confirmed for opener

England have named their playing XI for the Nepal encounter: Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Harry Brook (captain), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, and Luke Wood.
