New Delhi, Nov 7 : Jharkhand has scripted history by appointing IPS officer Tadasha Mishra as the new Director General of Police (DGP), making her the first woman to hold the top police post in the state’s history.
The Home, Prison and Disaster Management Department issued the official notification late Thursday night, ending days of speculation surrounding the leadership change. Mishra, a 1994-batch IPS officer, currently serving as Special Secretary in the Home Department, is set to assume charge on Friday. Her tenure, however, will be brief as she is due to retire on December 31, 2025.
The appointment came soon after the state government approved outgoing DGP Anurag Gupta’s voluntary retirement (VRS) request. Gupta, considered one of the most influential officers in recent years, had applied for VRS earlier this week, which was accepted through a notification issued on Thursday.
Interestingly, the move has stirred discussions in bureaucratic and political circles as Mishra, junior to Prashant Singh (1992 batch) and M S Bhatia (1993 batch), was chosen for the top post, bypassing seniority norms.
Despite the debate, Mishra’s appointment is being hailed as a landmark step for gender representation in the police force. Since Jharkhand’s formation in 2000, no woman had ever led the state police. Her elevation marks a historic and symbolic milestone for Jharkhand Police.
