NEW DELHI, Aug 12: Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Wednesday announced that he will not seek reappointment when his current term expires on February 20, 2027, bringing an end to uncertainty surrounding the future leadership of the Tata Group’s holding company.
Chandrasekaran said the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which together hold a majority stake in Tata Sons, had unanimously recommended extending his tenure by another five years.
The proposed extension was subsequently considered and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the company’s Board, he said.
According to Chandrasekaran, the proposal was placed before the Tata Sons Board at its February 24 meeting. However, the extension did not proceed after one director declined to support it.
“Since there was no unanimous support, I decided to defer the matter,” Chandrasekaran said in a statement.
He noted that no final decision had been reached during the six months following that board meeting. Given the strategic initiatives being undertaken across the group, he said certainty over the company’s leadership was important.
Chandrasekaran said he had therefore informed the Tata Sons Board earlier on Wednesday that he would not offer himself for another term after his existing tenure concludes in February next year.
He also urged the board to identify his successor at the earliest to facilitate an orderly handover and ensure continuity in the group’s operations and strategic plans.
Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group four decades ago and became chairman of Tata Sons in 2017. Before taking charge of the holding company, he headed Tata Consultancy Services as its chief executive.
His decision comes against the backdrop of reported differences between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts over the question of extending his tenure.
Tata Sons serves as the principal holding company of the Tata Group and has control over more than 30 major businesses, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors and Air India.
The upcoming leadership transition will now place the focus on the selection of Chandrasekaran’s successor as the group prepares for its next phase of growth and strategic expansion.
