HYDERABAD, Sept 5: A subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and its partners are planning to invest up to Rs 70,000 crore, or around $7.4 billion, in a 1-gigawatt artificial intelligence data centre campus in Telangana, marking one of the country’s major planned investments in AI infrastructure.
The proposed project is aimed at expanding computing capacity to support the rapidly growing demand for artificial intelligence applications, cloud services and data-intensive technologies.
The investment comes as India seeks to strengthen its domestic digital infrastructure and develop the computing resources required for the next phase of AI adoption.
The planned campus in Telangana will have a capacity of 1 gigawatt, highlighting the scale of infrastructure needed to run increasingly sophisticated AI models and services.
The project also reflects the growing involvement of major Indian technology companies in building the physical infrastructure required for artificial intelligence. Data centres require substantial computing power, electricity and cooling systems to operate large-scale AI workloads.
The proposed investment could further strengthen Telangana’s position as a technology and data infrastructure hub while supporting the wider expansion of India’s digital economy.
The move comes amid increasing global competition to develop AI capabilities, with companies and governments investing heavily in computing infrastructure, advanced chips and data centres.
For India, expanding domestic capacity is also important as businesses across sectors increasingly adopt generative AI, automation and other data-driven technologies.
The TCS-linked proposal therefore represents not only an infrastructure investment but also a broader push to create the computing backbone required for India’s emerging AI ecosystem.
As demand for AI-powered services continues to rise, large-scale data centre projects are expected to play a critical role in determining how quickly businesses and public institutions can deploy advanced digital technologies.
