Three Cheetah Cubs Born at Kuno National Park, India’s Population Rises to 38

Ninth Successful Litter Marks Milestone in Project Cheetah’s Three-Year Journey

SHEOPUR (MP), Feb 18: A female cheetah named Gamini has given birth to three cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, increasing India’s cheetah population to 38, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced on Wednesday.

The minister described the development as a significant achievement under Project Cheetah, the country’s flagship initiative to reintroduce the species after it was declared extinct in India decades ago. The programme began in September 2022 with the translocation of cheetahs from South Africa and Namibia.

Sharing the update on social media, Yadav said the latest births mark the ninth successful litter on Indian soil. With these additions, the number of surviving Indian-born cubs has reached 27. He credited wildlife officials, veterinary teams and field staff for their sustained efforts in ensuring the animals’ well-being.

Gamini, who was brought from South Africa, is now a second-time mother. The minister termed the moment a proud chapter in India’s conservation journey, noting that each birth strengthens the long-term sustainability of the reintroduction effort.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also welcomed the development, calling the state a key hub for wildlife conservation and biodiversity initiatives. He said the achievement reflects steady progress in restoring ecological balance through sustained policy focus and ground level management.

Earlier this month, another translocated cheetah, Aasha from Namibia, delivered five cubs at the same park, further boosting the population.
