CHENNAI, Aug. 7: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Friday clarified that the idea of initiating discussions with neighbouring Karnataka over the long standing Cauvery water-sharing dispute originated from his government, stressing that the move was driven by the hope of achieving a positive outcome for the state.
Speaking in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Vijay said the sensitive nature of the Cauvery issue demanded restraint and responsibility, adding that he had no intention of turning it into a political contest.
Replying to concerns raised by Leader of the Opposition Udhyanidhi Stalin, the Chief Minister reviewed Tamil Nadu’s approach to the dispute over the decades. He noted that while dialogue had been explored at various stages since 1969, the state had consistently relied on legal remedies to protect its rights.
Vijay reiterated that his administration remains firmly committed to pursuing the matter through constitutional and judicial channels, making it clear that there has been no shift in the government’s legal strategy.
Referring to the views of late Congress leader and former Leader of the Opposition P.G. Karuthiruman, Vijay said the Cauvery dispute requires careful handling because of its significance to millions of people dependent on the river.
The Chief Minister explained that he had considered travelling to Bengaluru to hold direct discussions with Karnataka, believing that sincere dialogue could complement the legal process and potentially ease tensions between the two states.
He said the initiative was motivated solely by the welfare of Tamil Nadu’s people and that he was willing to face criticism if it created an opportunity for meaningful progress. Vijay added that even countries with deep differences continue to engage in dialogue, and neighbouring states should also remain open to discussions while respecting legal frameworks.
Acknowledging that his proposal had drawn mixed reactions from various quarters, the Chief Minister maintained that every possible peaceful avenue should be explored in the interest of securing Tamil Nadu’s rightful share of Cauvery waters.
