Torrential Rain Triggers Flooding In Bandipora Village, Muddy Water Inundates Homes Near Darul Uloom Rahimiya

Residents blame blocked drainage system as muddy water enters houses, injuring two people

SRINAGAR, May 21: Heavy rainfall created a flood-like situation near Darul Uloom Rahimiya on the Srinagar-Bandipora road on Thursday after water mixed with mud entered several residential houses, causing damage to property and leaving two persons injured, officials said.

According to officials, the incident affected multiple homes in the Nusoo area of Bandipora after overflowing drains and rainwater inundated the locality following intense showers.

Two houses belonging to Nazir Ahmad Dar and Reyaz Ahmad Dar, both sons of Ghulam Ahmad Dar and residents of Nusoo, suffered partial damage during the incident.

Officials said two persons, identified as Muskaan and a minor, sustained minor injuries in the flooding. One injured person was discharged after receiving first aid, while the other was undergoing treatment at District Hospital Bandipora.

Local residents alleged that the Bandipora flood situation could have been prevented had the concerned departments acted earlier on repeated complaints regarding blocked drains and leaking pipelines in the area.

Residents claimed they had approached the Municipal Committee and the Roads and Buildings department a day before the incident and warned officials about a clogged drain and a leaking PHE pipe near the road.

A local resident, Zahoor Ahmad, said people had personally requested officials to clear the blocked drainage system before the rainfall intensified.

According to residents, officials from different departments allegedly shifted responsibility onto one another instead of taking immediate action, which later resulted in flooding of homes and roads.

Locals also alleged that a drain currently under construction had been narrowed compared to the earlier structure, reducing water flow capacity and contributing to the overflow during heavy rain.

The affected families have demanded immediate compensation for property damage and urged authorities to repair the damaged road and construct a strong protection wall to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Meanwhile, revenue and district administration officials visited the area to assess the losses. Authorities said restoration work had already begun and teams were deployed to clear water and debris from the affected locality.
