TRAI Report, Jio Tops Data Speed, Airtel Excels in Voice, BSNL Trails

TRAI’s latest Independent Drive Test across Kanpur, Unnao, and Prayagraj–Lucknow highway highlights stark differences in telecom performance.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its latest Independent Drive Test (IDT), offering a real-world check on mobile network quality across Uttar Pradesh. Conducted in August 2025 across Kanpur, Unnao, and the busy Prayagraj–Lucknow highway, the tests measured call success, drop rates, data speeds, and latency under everyday conditions.

The results painted a mixed picture. Reliance Jio dominated in speed and latency, delivering an average download speed of 295.58 Mbps, an upload speed of 34.12 Mbps, and the lowest latency at 14.15 ms. Airtel stood out in voice quality, scoring a Mean Opinion Score (MOS) of 3.96 and the lowest call drop rate of 0.36%. Meanwhile, BSNL lagged significantly, with slow data speeds of just 5.25 Mbps and the highest drop call rate at 3.58%.

Call setup success rates also revealed gaps—Jio led with 100% success and the fastest connection time (0.56 seconds), while Airtel and Vi followed closely. BSNL, however, trailed with slower connections at 3.90 seconds.

For hotspot and 5G performance, Jio maintained its edge with 244.62 Mbps downloads, while Airtel delivered 144.12 Mbps downloads but excelled in 5G upload speeds at 35.63 Mbps.

TRAI has shared the report with all telecom operators to encourage improvements in coverage and service quality. The findings highlight the growing divide between operators with advanced 5G infrastructure and those struggling to keep pace.
