Trap case progresses as ACB submits detailed chargesheet against former AE in Srinagar court

Assistant engineer booked for demanding bribe to clear NREGA bills; chargesheet filed

SRINAGAR, Dec 4: The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has formally filed a comprehensive charge-sheet against Tanveer Ahmad Dar, the then Assistant Engineer (AE) posted in the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO) Suresyar, Chadoora. The filing marks a significant step forward in a trap case registered by the Bureau last year.

According to an ACB official, the charge-sheet has been submitted before the Additional Special Anti-Corruption Judge, Srinagar, in connection with FIR No. 25/2023, registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, which deals specifically with public servants accepting illegal gratification.

The case was initiated following a written complaint received on December 21, 2023, wherein the complainant accused the Assistant Engineer of demanding a bribe of ₹2,000 to clear pending NREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) bills. Recognising the gravity of the allegation, the ACB responded promptly and planned a trap to verify the complaint.

During the operation, officials of the ACB apprehended Dar red-handed while he was accepting the bribe amount. The money was recovered from his possession on the spot. To further reinforce the evidence, his hands were subjected to the phenolphthalein test, a standard forensic procedure used in corruption trap cases, which returned positive and confirmed his direct contact with the tainted currency.

The ACB stated that the investigation uncovered clear, cogent and legally admissible evidence proving that the accused public servant had indulged in corrupt practices in violation of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The case file includes witness statements, technical evidence, recovery memos, forensic test reports, and other supporting documentation.

After completing the legal formalities, including securing the mandatory prosecution sanction from the competent Government authority, the Bureau proceeded to present the charge-sheet in the court.

With the filing now complete, the case has been formally admitted for judicial proceedings. The court has fixed the next date of hearing for February 17, 2026, marking the commencement of the trial phase in this corruption case.
