NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, Sep 21: US President Donald Trump once again claimed that he played a decisive role in ending the India-Pakistan conflict earlier this year through trade diplomacy, while asserting that he should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “stopping seven wars” across the globe.
Speaking at the American Cornerstone Institute Founder’s Dinner on Saturday, Trump said, “We are forging peace agreements, and we are stopping wars. So we stopped wars between India and Pakistan, Thailand and Cambodia.”
He elaborated that his approach with India and Pakistan was based on trade leverage. “Think of India and Pakistan. I stopped that — with trade. They want to trade. And I have great respect for both leaders. But when you take a look at all of these wars that we’ve stopped, 60 per cent were because of trade,” Trump said.
The US President listed conflicts he claimed to have resolved, including those between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Kosovo and Serbia, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Rwanda and the Congo.
Trump further stated that if mediating peace between Russia and Ukraine could merit a Nobel Prize, then his efforts in ending seven other disputes should qualify him for multiple Nobel awards. “I stopped seven wars. That’s one war, and that’s a big one,” he said.
While acknowledging his past ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump said he had expected the Russia-Ukraine conflict to be the easiest to resolve but remained optimistic it could still be settled.
