Trump’s Asia tour to include summit with Xi Jinping, focus on trade and investment deals

US President to visit Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea, high stakes Trump Xi meeting at APEC summit in Gyeongju expected to dominate agenda.

US, Oct 25 : President Donald Trump arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, kicking off his much anticipated Asia tour, which will take him to Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea amid ongoing trade tensions with China.

The week long tour is expected to focus on trade and investment deals across the region, with the highlight being Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on October 30 in Gyeongju, South Korea, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

Speaking ahead of his departure, Trump expressed optimism about resolving trade disputes with Beijing, saying, “I think we are going to come out very well and everyone’s going to be very happy.”

The meeting between the two leaders comes at a time when the US and China have escalated their confrontation over tariffs, rare earth minerals, technology, and drug trafficking, raising global economic stakes.

Trump’s Asia trip begins with the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, where he will join leaders of the 10 ASEAN nations, along with key dialogue partners including China’s Premier Li Qiang, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Australia’s Anthony Albanese, Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, and Canada’s Mike Carney.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate virtually.

Trump’s delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

Several ASEAN members, particularly Laos and Myanmar, continue to feel the impact of US-imposed 40% tariffs, while Thailand and Cambodia are expected to sign a peace agreement in Trump’s presence following earlier border tensions — a move seen as bolstering his image as a regional peacemaker.

At the APEC summit, Trump is expected to focus on bilateral meetings and investment discussions, possibly skipping the main leaders’ session. The US President has reportedly demanded that China lift restrictions on rare earth exports, resume soybean purchases, and halt the flow of fentanyl and its precursors into the United States.

Beijing has threatened to impose export controls on rare earth minerals, while Washington has warned of additional tariffs of up to 100%, potentially raising total duties on Chinese goods to 157%.

Whether the Trump Xi summit yields a breakthrough remains uncertain, but both sides are under pressure to reach at least a symbolic understanding that could ease trade tensions.

In Japan, where Trump will visit from Monday to Wednesday, his agenda will focus on trade and investment cooperation, including a meeting with Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace.

The South Korean leg of the tour may also see Trump receiving the country’s highest civilian honour the Grand Order of Mugunghwa (Eternal Blossom).

Speculation about a possible meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was dismissed by US officials after Pyongyang launched multiple ballistic missiles earlier this week, underscoring regional security tensions.

The APEC summit, themed “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Connect, Innovate, Prosper,” will take place under the shadow of the Trump Xi dialogue. Despite his aversion to the term “sustainable,” which he associates with climate policy, Trump is expected to use the platform to promote American investment and economic partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.
