KATHMANDU, Sept 16: Two earthquakes struck northwestern Nepal in quick succession early Wednesday, according to the National Seismological Research Centre. No casualties or property damage were reported immediately following the tremors.
The first earthquake, measuring 4.5 in magnitude, occurred at 1:51 am local time, the centre said. A second tremor of 4.2 magnitude was recorded at 4:28 am.
Both earthquakes were centred near Kalai in Mugu district, according to seismic authorities. The tremors were also felt in the neighbouring districts of Dolpa and Jumla.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage in the affected areas. Officials are continuing to monitor the situation for possible aftershocks and to assess whether the tremors have caused any damage that may not have been reported yet.
Nepal lies in a seismically active region and experiences earthquakes regularly. The latest tremors have prompted continued monitoring in the affected districts as authorities remain alert to further seismic activity.
