UGC Blacklists 54 State Private Universities for Non-Compliance

Higher education regulator warns institutions over non-compliance with disclosure norms

NEW DELHI, Sep 30: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 54 state private universities as defaulters for failing to comply with mandatory disclosure norms under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956. Officials said these institutions did not submit the required information for inspection or upload it on their websites despite multiple reminders.

UGC Secretary Manish Joshi stated that universities were directed to provide detailed documents attested by registrars and ensure public disclosure on their websites, with easy access for students and stakeholders. The guidelines mandate that information must be displayed on the home page without login requirements and supported by a search function for smooth navigation.

Madhya Pradesh leads the list with 10 defaulting universities, followed by Gujarat (8), Sikkim (5), and Uttarakhand (4). The UGC has circulated the list of defaulting institutions and warned them to take corrective measures immediately, cautioning that further action could follow if violations persist.

This action comes amid UGC’s intensified monitoring of private universities. In July, the regulator had already warned 23 institutions for not appointing ombudspersons, signaling stricter enforcement of compliance norms in higher education.
