New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced an expansion of its industry internship programme, encouraging higher educational institutions across the country to strengthen collaborations with businesses and research organisations to improve student employability.
The revised framework, unveiled on Tuesday, aims to provide undergraduate and postgraduate students with greater exposure to real world work environments through structured internships integrated into academic programmes.
Under the initiative, universities will be encouraged to partner with companies from sectors including information technology, manufacturing, healthcare, renewable energy, financial services and emerging technology. Students will gain practical experience while earning academic credits linked to their internship performance.
UGC officials said the programme supports the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 by promoting experiential learning, innovation and multidisciplinary education. Institutions have also been advised to establish dedicated career development and internship cells to coordinate placements and mentor students.
The commission noted that internships will help bridge the gap between classroom education and industry expectations. Students will have opportunities to develop communication skills, teamwork, project management and problem solving abilities alongside technical expertise.
Industry representatives welcomed the initiative, stating that closer collaboration between universities and employers will create a workforce better prepared for rapidly changing job markets. Companies participating in the programme are expected to offer structured mentorship, performance evaluations and skill development opportunities.
Universities have also been encouraged to collaborate with startups, research laboratories and public sector organisations to diversify internship opportunities. The programme seeks to ensure that students from different academic disciplines receive meaningful exposure aligned with their career aspirations.
Education specialists believe the expanded internship framework will improve graduate readiness, encourage innovation and strengthen India’s higher education ecosystem by fostering stronger links between academia and industry.
The UGC said it will periodically review the implementation of the initiative and gather feedback from institutions, employers and students to further refine the programme and maximise learning outcomes across the country.
