New Delhi, July 27: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced a nationwide Academic Credit Portal aimed at making higher education more flexible and student friendly. The initiative, announced over the weekend, is designed to simplify the transfer of academic credits between recognised institutions, allowing students to continue their education without losing previously earned credits.
The portal is a significant step in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes multidisciplinary learning and greater academic mobility. Through the digital platform, universities and colleges can upload verified academic records, making the transfer process faster and more transparent.
According to UGC officials, students who change institutions due to personal, financial or academic reasons will now find it easier to continue their studies. The system also benefits learners enrolled in online, distance and hybrid education programmes by maintaining a unified academic record.
Universities have been instructed to integrate their student databases with the portal to ensure real-time verification of academic achievements. Institutions have also been advised to establish dedicated help desks to guide students during the transition period.
Education experts have welcomed the move, stating that the new platform reduces bureaucratic hurdles and supports lifelong learning. They believe the initiative will encourage students to pursue interdisciplinary courses without worrying about losing academic progress.
The commission has also announced training sessions for university administrators and technical staff to ensure smooth implementation of the portal. Additional features, including digital degree verification and academic progress tracking, are expected to be introduced in the coming months.
Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to building a technology-driven higher education ecosystem that places students at the centre of academic reforms.
