Moscow, July 21: The conflict between Russia and Ukraine intensified further on Monday after Ukraine launched one of its largest long range drone operations against Moscow. Russian authorities claimed that more than 400 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were directed toward the Russian capital during the overnight assault, marking another significant escalation in the ongoing war.
The large scale attack came only hours after Russia carried out fresh missile strikes on Kyiv and several other Ukrainian cities, continuing the cycle of retaliatory attacks that has defined the conflict for more than four years. The exchange of aerial assaults underscores the diminishing prospects for an immediate diplomatic breakthrough.
According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Russian air defence systems intercepted the majority of the incoming drones before they reached the city centre. He stated that around 85 drones were destroyed in the vicinity of Moscow, while many others were intercepted at greater distances from the capital.
Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed that at least ten people sustained injuries during the attack. Several residential buildings, along with civilian infrastructure, reportedly suffered damage due to falling drone debris and explosions caused by interceptions.
Authorities also reported a fire at the Yuzhnye Vrata industrial park, located approximately 30 kilometres south of Moscow. Emergency teams were deployed to contain the blaze, and officials said the situation was brought under control after several hours.
Local media outlet Astra additionally reported that an oil storage facility in Podolsk, situated south of Moscow, caught fire during the attack. However, Russian officials had not officially confirmed the reported strike at the time of reporting.
Ukraine Claims Military and Logistics Targets Were Hit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the overnight operation targeted military logistics infrastructure and fuel storage facilities in the Moscow region. According to him, Ukrainian forces successfully struck logistics hubs located hundreds of kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
Zelenskyy also claimed that Ukrainian forces attacked two vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which is allegedly used to transport sanctioned oil exports. Additionally, he said four Russian dry cargo ships operating in the Black Sea were targeted during the coordinated military operation.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine’s battlefield claims could be independently verified.
Drone Warfare Continues to Evolve
The latest offensive reflects Ukraine’s growing reliance on domestically developed long-range drone technology, which has become an increasingly important component of its military strategy. Over the past two years, Kyiv has expanded its ability to strike deep inside Russian territory, particularly targeting fuel depots, logistics centres and industrial facilities that support Russia’s military operations.
Military analysts note that Russia’s vast geographical size makes it increasingly difficult to shield critical infrastructure from repeated drone attacks despite significant investments in air defence systems.
Earlier this year, the Russian Defence Ministry reported intercepting more than 1,000 Ukrainian drones within a single 24-hour period, illustrating the growing scale and frequency of such operations.
Russia Maintains Missile Campaign
While Ukraine has increasingly relied on drones for long-range attacks, Russia continues to depend heavily on ballistic and cruise missiles to strike Ukrainian cities and strategic infrastructure.
The latest Russian missile barrage targeted Kyiv and several other urban centres overnight, causing renewed concern over civilian safety and infrastructure damage.
The continued exchange of missile and drone attacks has further complicated international efforts to revive peace negotiations, with both sides showing little indication of reducing military operations.
Political Challenges in Kyiv
The latest escalation also comes amid political tensions within Ukraine. President Zelenskyy announced that he would hold a series of key meetings aimed at addressing domestic concerns following last week’s government reshuffle.
The changes have sparked public debate over Ukraine’s military leadership after the appointment decisions left veteran General Oleksandr Syrskyi in charge of the armed forces while reform-minded leader Mykhailo Fedorov was not given the defence portfolio. Demonstrations were reported in several areas, with supporters expressing differing views over the government’s defence strategy.
Despite the internal political challenges, Ukrainian leaders have reiterated that military operations against Russian forces will continue while efforts are made to strengthen national defence capabilities.
Conflict Shows No Signs of Slowing
The latest exchange of attacks highlights the increasingly sophisticated nature of the war, where drones, missiles and long-range precision strikes have become central to military operations on both sides.
As aerial warfare expands deeper into Russian territory and missile strikes continue across Ukraine, hopes for a negotiated settlement remain distant. With both countries continuing to strengthen offensive capabilities, the conflict appears set to remain highly volatile in the months ahead.
