UP, Nov 3 : A 27 year old woman preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination allegedly jumped into the Ganga River from the Ganga Barrage in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor on Monday morning. A massive search operation has been launched to trace her.
The woman, identified as Lalita, hailed from Khanpur Majra village under the Chandpur police station limits in Bijnor district. Daughter of Ved Prakash, a government employee posted as Sangrah Ameen in Bijnor, Lalita was an IIT Kanpur B.Tech graduate and had been preparing for the UPSC exam for several years.
According to police sources, Lalita left home early Monday morning for her routine walk with a teenage neighbour. However, she later took a roadways bus to the Ganga Barrage, where the incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses said that Lalita suddenly jumped into the river while walking on the barrage bridge. Her teenage companion raised an alarm, and locals immediately informed the authorities.
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police reached the spot and began a search operation in the river. The Irrigation Department assisted by adjusting the barrage gates to facilitate the rescue.
Mirapur Police Station in charge Ravindra Singh confirmed that the search was ongoing. “Efforts are being made to locate the woman. Her family has been informed, and we are providing all necessary assistance,” he said.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Lalita may have been under stress due to exam preparation, though police said the exact cause behind the incident remains unclear.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the search for the missing aspirant intensifies.
