Baghdad: A missile struck a helipad inside the compound of the United States Embassy in Baghdad on Saturday, according to two security officials familiar with the incident.
The projectile landed within the embassy’s boundaries in the highly secured Green Zone, an area that hosts key Iraqi government buildings and several foreign diplomatic missions. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak publicly about the matter.
Video footage obtained by the Associated Press showed smoke rising from inside the embassy compound shortly after the impact, indicating damage near the helipad area.
Authorities have not yet released details about casualties or the extent of the damage. Security agencies are continuing to assess the situation as tensions remain high in the region.
