NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, Feb 7: US President Donald Trump has lifted the 25% tariffs previously imposed on India for buying Russian oil, highlighting New Delhi’s “significant steps” to align with US national security and economic priorities.
In an executive order issued Friday, Trump noted that India has pledged to halt both direct and indirect imports of Russian oil, increase energy purchases from the United States, and engage in a 10-year defence cooperation framework with Washington.
“After reviewing the latest information and recommendations from senior officials, I have determined that India has taken substantial measures to address the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066,” Trump said. “Consequently, I have decided to remove the additional ad valorem duty on imports from India.”
This development signals closer US-India collaboration on energy, defence, and strategic interests, while easing trade tensions between the two nations.
