LUCKNOW, Jan 15 : Uttar Pradesh has significantly expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure over the past five years, setting up 2,316 charging stations as part of its push towards clean energy and green transportation.
The expansion places Uttar Pradesh among the leading states contributing to India’s growing EV ecosystem and reflects its rapid urbanisation and industrial growth. Officials said the progress also underscores the Yogi Adityanath government’s focus on sustainable development and future ready mobility solutions.
Of the total charging stations established in the state, 540 are fast chargers while 1,776 are slow chargers, indicating a balanced network designed to meet the needs of both urban and semi-urban regions. Uttar Pradesh’s contribution is significant when compared to the national total of 29,151 EV charging stations.
EV charging infrastructure is being steadily expanded across major cities, including Lucknow, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Agra.
Sandeep Yadav, CEO of Yahvi Group, said on Wednesday that Uttar Pradesh is rapidly advancing in EV infrastructure development. He noted that Yahvi Group has already set up EV charging stations for trucks in Mathura and Vrindavan, highlighting the state’s growing focus on commercial electric mobility as well.
Establishing Uttar Pradesh as a leading state in electric mobility remains a key government priority. An investment-friendly environment has been created to encourage private companies and investors to set up EV charging stations, officials said.
The government has stressed that the expansion of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure will help reduce carbon emissions, curb pollution and improve air quality in one of India’s most populous states. Reduced dependence on petrol and diesel is also expected to deliver long-term economic benefits.
Under the Centre’s FAME-I and FAME-II schemes, 9,576 EV charging stations have been set up nationwide, with Uttar Pradesh among the beneficiary states. Additionally, ₹2,000 crore has been earmarked for expanding EV charging infrastructure under the PM e-Drive scheme.
Experts predict a sharp rise in the number of electric vehicles in Uttar Pradesh in the coming years. In response, the state government is working on plans to develop charging stations along expressways, in industrial hubs, at bus terminals, railway stations and key tourist destinations.
